Decatur County, GA -- February 6, 2012
A fatal accident in Decatur County has claimed the life of a Climax, GA man.
The accident happened around 5:45 a.m. Russel Andrews was driving on Antioch Church Road in Climax, Georgia about two miles north of Hwy 262 and US 27 South. Andrews vehicle hit a truck that was trying to turn around in the two lane road when it got stuck. Andrews was pronounced dead on scene.
The driver of that truck, Larry Peterson, from Quincy, FL was apparently trying to stop traffic but could not stop Andrews.
"Never hit his brakes, struck the rear axel of the semi...causing the fatality, " said Trooper First Class Brian Palmer of the Georgia State Patrol.
Georgia State Patrol believes Andrews was not wearing a seat belt.
A Decatur County resident speaking on partial anonymity over the phone travels this road daily. She says that the clay on the ground left by the trucks from the Active Minerals mine provides hazardous driving conditions as is.
"Very, very dangerously slippery. It has been like being on ice or black ice. I've witnessed a tractor trailer all, but jack knife, and run off the side of the road," explained a woman only wanting to be identified as 'Joyce.'
Georgia State Patrol does not believe the clay residue led to the accident.
Charges will be filed pending the outcome of the investigation. We tried to reach the Active Minerals plant and BH Transfer Co., the company that owns Peterson's truck, but both have yet to return our calls.
