TALLAHASSEE, Florida- October 27, 2012

Highlighting October’s Energy Action Month, Commissioners and senior staff from the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) exchanged their suits for jeans and participated in a locally-sponsored Big Bend Habitat for Humanity (BBHH) “build.”

PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé, who normally wields a gavel during Commission meetings, grabbed a hammer for the build. “Energy efficiency and conservation are critical components of Florida’s energy strategy,” he said. “Implementing energy efficiency measures is often the simplest way to save on home energy bills, and Habitat representatives help their clients conserve. From switching to CFLs and regularly changing air-conditioning filters, to improving insulation, we can all reduce our energy bills.”

The PSC annually observes Energy Action Month, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, with events to promote energy efficiency and conservation. By assisting BBHH this year, the Commission is highlighting Habitat’s mission to build energy-efficient, affordable homes for low-income consumers in the community and is supporting the Energy Action Month conservation message. BBHH has also expanded beyond traditional homebuilding to acquire and rehabilitate vacant/foreclosed housing stock and provide critical home repairs and weatherization for existing homeowners including returning veterans.

This event also recognized the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners’ partnership established with a Habitat for Humanity branch in January as part of its “Anybody Can Serve, So Let’s Conserve” campaign. NARUC Commissioners were encouraged to “volunteer at various Habitat projects around the country and share their expertise on energy issues.”
