POLK CITY, Fla. (AP) -- A reproduction of a sea plane that once flew between St. Petersburg and Tampa is getting ready to take off.
New Year's Day marks the 100th anniversary of the Benoist. The plane once ferried one passenger at a time across Tampa Bay.
Kermit Weeks of Fantasy of Flight in Polk City decided to build a reproduction of the plane to celebrate the historic flight. He plans to fly his aircraft Jan. 1 from St. Petersburg to Tampa.
Weeks tells WFTS-TV that construction on the reproduction is just about finished and should be ready for testing this week. The Federal Aviation Administration still has to license the aircraft and approve the flight.
