Marianna, FL -- March 30, 2012 --
More than one hundred people rallied in Marianna Friday morning in support of Trayvon Martin. They joined the thousands of others across the country continuing to demand justice for the Sanford teen shot and killed in February.
"We want answers. I think there was injustice because you have a young man unarmed, pack of skittles, hoodie, and a sweet tea, he was gunned down for walking home from the grocery store," said rally organizer Kenton Curry.
At the center of the controversy is Martin's killer, George Zimmerman. He claims the shooting was self defense, others say it was an act of racism. Nobody knows yet for sure, but Curry and many others in Marianna and throughout the U.S. are outraged at the Sanford Police Department for refusing to arrest Zimmerman.
"A lack of training on their (Sanford P.D.) efforts? I don't know," said Curry.
"I believe that he (Zimmerman) should have been apprehended," said Marianna resident Angela McFarland.
With signs in their hands, shirts on their backs, and heavy hearts, ralliers in Marianna Friday echoed the message still being heard nationwide.
"It could have been me, it could have been one of my friends, it could happen to anyone around here," said Marianna resident James Dallas, 17 years old.
"We need to everyday make the people aware of what's going on in our cities, and towns, and the United States," said Jackson County NAACP President Richard Patterson.
Jackson County's Chapter of the NAACP will hold a town hall meeting Monday April 2nd at 6:30 p.m. at the St. James A.M.E. Church in Marianna. In reference to Martin's case, members will discuss concerns they have with the Jackson County School Board's policies and procedures.
