Talgov Release: ENERGY STAR and natural gas appliances help save energy and money

To encourage energy efficiency and stimulate the local economy, the City of Tallahassee will double its existing rebates on certain ENERGY STAR and natural gas appliances purchased locally starting tomorrow, February 14. The program was approved by the Tallahassee City Commission at its regular meeting this afternoon.

This incentive applies to qualifying purchases made locally between February 14 and April 30. The full amount of the rebate will be credited toward the customer's City of Tallahassee utility bill.

"Once again, the City of Tallahassee has decided to 'double down' in regard to customer satisfaction," said City Commissioner Scott Maddox, lead commissioner on the City's Financial Viability Target Issue Committee. "I expect that the double rebates will be extremely well received by area customers, contractors and vendors."

"This reflects our strong commitment to conservation by helping customers save energy, water and money, while preserving vital resources for the future," said Commissioner Andrew Gillum, who also serves on the on the Financial Viability Target Issue Committee. "In addition to contributing to lower utility bills, it provides assistance to local businesses and contractors during these challenging economic times."

Qualifying purchases include the following ENERGY STAR-certified and natural gas appliances:

Appliance: New Rebate (Amounts reflect double rebate)

Dishwasher: $80
Clothes Washers: $200
Refrigerators: $150
Freezers: $80
Pool Pumps (variable speed): $400
Air Conditioner/Heat Pumps: $700
Solar Water Heaters: $900
Water Heaters (heat pump style): $600
Heat Pumps (water source style): $1500
Natural Gas Furnaces: up to $1400
Natural Gas Water Heaters: up to $1350
Natural Gas Ranges: up to $400
Natural Gas Clothes Dryers: up to $400
Natural Gas Fire Logs: $100
Natural Gas Grills: up to $200
Natural Gas Pool Heaters: up to $900

Purchases of energy-efficient products or renewable energy systems for the home may also be eligible for federal tax credits. Qualifying equipment includes solar thermal and solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems, geothermal heat pumps, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, water heaters, insulation, windows, roofs and biomass stoves.
