Retired U.S. Marine Walks Thousands Of Miles To Support Fellow Veterans

Thomasville, Georgia- August 30, 2012

Retired U.S. Marine Mac McQuown has already walked 1,340 miles and with each mile completed, he gets one step closer to fulfilling his goal.

McQuown, 51, is on a mission to raise awareness and money for wounded and homeless veterans. It's all part of a charity called PROJECT FOOT.

"Every state produces veterans, so what better way to bring attention back to them then to march to the capital of all 50 states," he said.

On Thursday, McQuown stopped by Thomasville Fire Rescue to rest up for his trek to Tallahassee.

"It's an honor," said Allen Powell, the Battalion Chief of Thomasville Fire Rescue. "The thing he's doing for our county, for all of us, for our freedom. We enjoy having him and we're just here for him, for whatever he needs."

McQuown started his journey September 11, 2011. He says so far, it's been quite an adventure.

"I've seen beautiful things. I've met wonderful people. I get to see the country at three miles per hour and it really makes you appreciate what a wonderful, beautiful country we have."

The experience has been just as rewarding for those people he meets along the way.

"They'll shake my hand. They'll hug me. Often we part ways with tears in our eyes because they really appreciate the attention we're bringing back to the veterans," he said.

McQuown is expected to arrive at the Capitol Building in Tallahassee on September 3, 2012 around 11 a.m.
