Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) is seeking entries from local students in the Annual Manufacturing Appreciation Week Design Contest for elementary, middle, and high school students.

This Contest allows students from across Georgia to submit artwork depicting the importance of manufacturing to their lives and communities for the chance to win scholarship money and an opportunity to attend the Governor’s Awards Luncheon.

The contest includes three categories:
 Grades K-5
 Grades 6-8
 Grades 9-12

Once all submissions are collected, four state winners will be selected in each category. The entries will be judged based on creativity, skill/quality of the artwork, and the students’ grasp of manufacturing.

Award winners will receive scholarships in the amount of $500 for first place, $300 for second place, $100 for third place and $50 for honorable mentions in each of the three design categories.

Contest creators hope that the competition will inspire area students to research information on manufacturing and learn that a career in manufacturing can be so much more than assembly line work.

Manufacturing Appreciation Week (MAW) was developed by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

This Week was created to promote awareness of manufacturing and its importance to the state of Georgia.

Manufacturing is vital to Georgia’s economy, accounting for almost 10 percent of the employment in the State. Nearly 9,500 manufacturing facilities are located in Georgia, providing jobs for approximately 349,138 Georgians.

Some of Georgia's manufacturing operations include a variety of industries, such as transportation equipment, aerospace, computers and electronics, food, paper, metal fabrication, textiles, and plastics.

This year, MAW will be celebrated April 14-18 with an awards luncheon hosted on April 17, 2014, at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta. At this ceremony the winners of the Design Contest and Manufacturer of the Year will be celebrated and recognized.
SWGTC will accept entries from students enrolled in schools within Grady, Mitchell, or Thomas counties.

Deadline to enter the student design competition is February 5, 2014. All entries should be submitted to the Office of Institutional Advancement at Southwest Georgia Technical College at 15689 U.S. Highway 19 North, Thomasville, Georgia, 31792.

Art may be created with paint, watercolors, pencils, markers, crayons, charcoal, etc., and art from grades 9-12 may be computer-generated. All artwork must 11" X 17” and flat (no 3-D objects should be glue or pasted to the submission).

Art submissions should portray manufacturing specific to the state of Georgia. On the back of each entry, in the upper right-hand corner, please include: student’s name, school’s name, school’s phone number, and Southwest Georgia Technical College.
