Salons and Barber Shops Spreading Diabetes Awareness With Free Screenings

Tallahassee, FL - November 13, 2012 - November is Diabetes Awareness Month and some local health advocates are using salons and barber shops to spread awareness.

Organizers with Ahmed Temple are offering free glucose and blood pressure screenings to promote prevention especially among the African American community which they say is a group at high risk for diabetes.

"We want to take it to the people where they normally come in and out during the day in the heart of the community and actually hair salons and barber shops have always been an anchoring foundation in the black community," says Otis Kirksey, Pharm.D., R.Ph. who assisted with the screenings.

Tomorrow the Florida Department of Health and Tallahassee Memorial Hospital will recognize World Diabetes Day on the steps of Old Capitol building.

Ahmed Temple has been asked to participate in this event.
