Second-Grader Brings Grenade for Show and Tell

Associated Press Release

SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A Florida Panhandle elementary school called in a bomb squad after a second-grader brought a grenade for show-and-tell.

Wendy Ammons of the Walton County Sheriff's Office says the bomb squad determined that the grenade wasn't live.

The county's superintendent tells the Northwest Florida Daily News that the Bay Elementary School student bought the grenade at a gun show with his parents over the weekend.

Superintendent Carlene Anderson says the boy's parents warned him not to take it to school, but he brought it to class Monday anyway.

Anderson says a school resource officer found a hole in the bottom of the grenade but still thought it best to call in a bomb squad. All outside activities were stopped while authorities examined the device outside the school.
