Cairo, Georgia- June 29, 2012

A problem with a Cairo pumping or lift station has caused a roughly 25-thousand gallon sewage spill. Cairo City Manager Chris Addleton says it happened Wednesday morning and was repaired within a few hours.

Addleton says some of the sewage spilled into Little Tired Creek.
He says the spill has not affected any recreation areas or drinking water.

Addleton also says the Georgia Environmental Protection Department has been notified. He says no clean up is being required.

Addleton expects the sewage leaking into the creek will flow to a swamp south of Cairo.

The spill occurred at a pump station about to be replaced.
Addleton says construction on a new $700-thousand pump station is scheduled to begin next month.
