A lover's triangle is at the center of a Tallahassee murder trial.

It was a typical summer night at the Leon Arms Apartments in August 2012.

With music blaring, witnesses say 20 or so people were outside having fun.

Then Derek Norton testified he heard what he thought was a firecracker over the din of the music.

He found out differently when he saw a young man face down on the ground.

"He had blood squirting from the back of his head," Norton testified.

Police charged Raynard Ford with the murder of Davvon Brewton.

Attorneys say Ford had a child with a woman and they separated.

The woman then had a child with Brewton.

When the woman decided to resume her relationship with Ford, his attorney claims Brewton was very angry.

There are different stories about what happened the night of the shooting.

"Mr. Ford's intent at that time was to hopefully, peacefully resolve the issue that existed," said Ford's attorney Daren Shippy.

"The defendant was the one who introduced a gun into a fist fight," said prosecutor John Hutchinson.

A 16 year old boy testified he saw Ford and Brewton yelling at each other from his apartment window.

Then he says he saw Ford reach for a gun in his waistband.

According to testimony, Ford and Brewton struggled for control of the gun when it went off.

The single shot went through Ford's arm and then struck Brewton in the back of the head killing him.

Ford's attorney called the shooting accidental or self-defense.
