TALLAHASSEE, FL — State Representative Alan Williams (D-Tallahassee) was selected as “2011 Legislator of the Year” by the Northwest Florida League of Cities (NWFLC), a prestigious honor that recognizes his work on behalf of, and tireless support for municipal governments. The NWFLC mission is to assist Northwest Florida’s municipal governments in carrying out their responsibilities to their citizens and to promote effective government throughout its service region in enhancing the quality of life for all Floridians.

An award presentation was made by NWLFC Board Members P.C. Wu (City of Pensacola), Delores Madison (City of Midway) and Gil Ziffer (City of Tallahassee) along with Mayor John Marks (City of Tallahassee) during a City of Tallahassee Commission Meeting on Wednesday, February 8th in appreciation of Representative Williams support for local government on a variety of issues throughout the legislative session.

“This recognition is a tremendous honor, said Rep. Williams. It is an honor to represent the needs of cities in the State Legislature. I have fought on your behalf on issues as QTI, Septic Tank provisions, Privatization of Florida State Hospital, unfunded mandates, and funding cuts to education .Local governments are creating a better environmentally sustainable economy without compromising their citizens’ way of life.”

Delores Madison, Midway City Council Member and NWFLC Director-At-Large stated, “Midway City Council Members nominated Representative Williams, because of his impact on the Northwest Florida area in issues regarding education, health care, jobs and public safety. It was a joyous moment to our Council when we learned that he had been selected as the Northwest Florida League of Cities 2011 Legislator of the Year.” NWFLC City of Pensacola Director, P.C. Wu stated, “The NWFLC appreciates the outstanding relationships we have with both the Florida House and Senate. Because of our relationship with Rep Williams, and other legislatures, this bond is stronger than ever."

The Northwest Florida League of Cities (NWFLC) is the largest regional municipal government organization in Florida. NWFLC membership currently consists of 53 Member Cities ranging from Pensacola in the west to Madison in the east, and 60 Associate Members.

The faculty senate at Valdosta State University is taking a stand against concealed guns on campus. They unanimously passed a resolution last week to keep guns out of the classrooms and off university grounds. The faculty senate is standing in opposition to house bill 981. The bill proposed allowing citizens the right to carry concealed weapons into bars.. churches.. college campuses and even elementary schools.
