Chaires, Florida-A small North Florida community came together Thursday to honor a young Marine who made the ultimate sacrifice.

A sniper's bullet took the life of United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Daniel Chaires in 2006 while he was stationed in Iraq. Now the small community of Chaires, which Daniel's ancestors helped found, is honoring the young Marine who sacrificed it all for the people and country he loved.

The statue the community dedicated to Daniel sits in front of his former elementary school and across the street from the home where he grew up.

"This statue is just a reminder not only of the Chaires family, but of so many people and of what they have given," says Harry Chaires, Daniel's father.

The statue stands as a reminder of the sacrifice Daniel made for his country. It's a message the Chaires family knows is not lost on this community.

"It's very humbling. It tells me the community still cares. They appreciate what Marines are doing," says retired USMC Major Ray Spaulding.

The statue stands in front of the entrance of Chaires Elementary School. It was donated by the non-profit group Allied Veterans of Florida. The group helps veterans in need.
