TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- It’s been nearly three years since the family of Ivan Aguilar last saw him. On his 18th birthday, the family says they are remembering Ivan and hoping for his return.

"There is no happiness. It's incomparable. Every day is really difficult but his birthdays are more difficult than other days," says Ivan’s mother, Emma Gutierrez.

Ivan was last seen on May 8, 2014 when his family says he left their home with nothing but his bike. Friends say Ivan’s girlfriend’s mother found pictures the two had been exchanging via text. Worried he would get in trouble, Ivan ran away from home.

Investigators say this case is an unusual one. They don’t have any leads or updates, but the family says they hope Ivan turns up soon.

"It’s like something she wishes nobody would go through. It’s the most difficult thing. It’s like not having life," Gutierrez says.

This is still an open case. Crime Stoppers has a $1,000 reward out for any information on Ivan’s whereabouts.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- A Leon County teenager is featured in a new video by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

In the video, Ivan Aguilar's family makes a tearful plea for his return.

Aguilar was 15 years old when he ran away in May 2014 and today marks his 17th birthday.

"We're always going to be looking for you. Please come back," his mother said in Spanish. "We don't see happiness here," his father said. "Everyone needs you. Everyone loves you. We're never going to forget you. We're going to do whatever it takes to find you."

Leon County Sheriff's Detectives say Aguilar disappeared with only his bike and the clothes on his back and intentionally left his cell phone behind.

"He hasn't contacted mom or dad or any other family," LCSO Detective Teresa Howard said, "and when he ran away he knew to leave his cell phone and completely clean it out to where it was back to factory settings so he knew that we could track him with his cell phone and he left it at home."

Detectives say Aguilar ran away because he feared getting in trouble for sexting his girlfriend.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Leon County Sheriff's Office at 860-606-5800.
