"Take what makes you different and use it to change the world."

That's the message one anti-bullying advocate delivered to hundreds of Leon county students this morning.

Ronnie Bachman knows bullying first hand.

"I know. Later on today I will go to get gas and then someone will shoot a picture or giggle or laugh," said Bachman.

But it's his up-close knowledge of teasing that makes his anti-bullying message so clear to kids.

"Just to treat everyone the way you wanted to be treated," said one middle-school student.

"It was really good it made me cry," said another.
"Everybody is special in their own way," said a another middle-school student.

"When Ron comes around the corner, and Ron has lost his legs of course, these kids understand in a millisecond, this guy knows what he's talking about," said Bachman.

Ronnie's message is very simple. It's just one word. Love.

"It's about you feeling good about you and who you are first. And then after you've taken care of it and fed your spirit, your personality your everything, then you go out and share that with the world," said Bachman.

And if you're being bullied, Bachman wants to tell you something.

Don't let them win. Have so much self assurance that you know you belong here. You know how right it is for you to be in this world," said Bachman.

Bullying is a very hot topic in the media today, and the negative affects of it are numerous. An estimated 160,000 students refuse to go to school every day because of bullying, and students who are bullied often experience depression, poor grades, and low self esteem. To help get this new year started off on a more positive note, I have put together an anti-bullying assembly called "The STOP Bullying Show". Based out of Orlando, Florida, this 45-minute presentation raises the awareness of bullying in a fun and interactive way; while teaching students very specific things they can do to help put a stop to it. It is specifically designed for grades 3-5. Highlights of the show can be seen here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qAvD01RD9E http://www.StopBullyingShow.com

I am going through this issue right now with my kids at a middle school and I am almost fed up with the school and this student that they know is a problem. He is causing my kids to defend themselves and then be pubish for defending themselves all because the refuse to handle him. My fear is that one day my kids might have to defend not only from a fight but swomething worse.

The faculty senate at Valdosta State University is taking a stand against concealed guns on campus. They unanimously passed a resolution last week to keep guns out of the classrooms and off university grounds. The faculty senate is standing in opposition to house bill 981. The bill proposed allowing citizens the right to carry concealed weapons into bars.. churches.. college campuses and even elementary schools.
