Tallahassee, FL - About 40 officers and staff members from TPD walked around Lake Ella at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Leading the way was Chief Michael DeLeo and City Commissioner Scott Maddox.

The walk was for "National Start Walking Day" to encourage people to start getting active.

The City of Tallahassee has turned it into a "healthy" competition.

Last year's third place winner, Joanne Maltese, ran seven and a half miles to work before taking part in the walk around the lake. She says, "I run on a regular basis. This is just one of those things where I can get out there and promote walking, running, exercising, biking; anything that you can do to get out there."

Maltese says she's going for first place this year. The competition is among all City employees. Whoever takes the most steps by the end of the day gets a $100 gift card. Second place gets a $50 gift card, and third place gets a $25 gift card.
