Tallahassee, Florida- August 22, 2012
The City of Tallahassee is number one for a number of reasons.
City leaders announced awards the city and other officials have won recently at Wednesday's city commissioner meeting at City Hall.
Tallahassee Fire Chief, Cindy Dick, was named Florida Fire Chief of the Year back in July. She says that her whole staff is imperative to her honor.
"You can't be fire chief of the year unless you have an outstanding staff who's out there everyday doing the work that needs to be done," said Dick. "Sometimes the best manager is the one that gets out of the way."
The TPD also is number one. The department was recognized for winning the National Law Enforcement Challenge Award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police for traffic enforcement. In the last year, Tallahassee has seen a 30% decrease in accidents and a 50% decrease in alcohol-related deaths in accidents.
Chief Dennis Jones also was recently named the new President of the Florida Police Chief's Association. But Jones was more happy for his staff.
"I'm prouder of the men and women of the Tallahassee Police Department because of the traffic awards that we received," Jones said.
The city also presented the Mobility Manager of the Year Award to Andrea Rosser by Joanne Hutchinson, the Regional Ambassador for the National Resource Center for Human Coordination. The State Community Transportation Coordinator of the Year Award was given to StarMetro. City Auditor, Sam McCall received the David M. Walker Award from the National Intergovernmental Audit Forum.
