Press Release

Tallahassee, Fla. – Tallahassee-based Zicro Academy today announced that two of its four Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes, who competed in the New York Summer International Open by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), won first and second place in the championship held this past weekend (July 18-20, 2014) in New York City, N.Y.

Dr. Jim Whyte, his sons, Dylan and Evan Whyte, and Taylor Dove represented Tallahassee at the IBJJF Championship. Dr. Whyte placed first in his class, winning the New York Summer International Open, and Dove placed second. This is Dr. Whyte’s 9th National & International championship, including the Worlds/Pan Am.

“I am extremely honored to have won the Championship title at the New York Summer International Open,” said Dr. Whyte, who has been training in Jiu-Jitsu for six years and whose wife and children also participate in the sport. “Being able to share this experience with my family and our community is an honor, and I am so very proud of the hard work our entire team has not only put into this competition, but in their daily training.”

Dove, a local student at Tallahassee Community College, who has been training at the Zicro Academy since he was 13 years old said: “I am so excited to have placed in this competition. Just thinking how far I’ve come and how much I have achieved since I first started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an accomplishment.”

“I’m very proud of all of our students who competed in this internationally-recognized competition,” said Felipe “Zicro” Neto, owner and head instructor of Zicro Academy, who is a 4th degree black belt with a degree in Exercise Fitness with more than 25 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Neto’s philosophy on Jiu-Jitsu is “always train hard, believe in yourself, and never get discouraged or give up. Keep your head up and always look ahead and focus on your goals.”

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting, while promoting the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant by utilizing proper techniques. Made famous as an integral part of popular cage fighting, such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes taking the fight to the ground and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person.

Zicro Academy has been active in Tallahassee for seven years, offering classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Cardio Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts and Functional Training. The academy focuses on providing a holistic program that seeks to improve its students’ self-defense skills, individual health and mental well-being. Its goal is to help students develop their concentration, discipline, self-esteem and self-control. As students become more advanced, they gain experience and knowledge that lasts forever.
