Tallahassee Council on Culture and Arts Release

The Council on Culture and Arts presents Tallahassee Faces and Places: Photography by Roger Raepple and Mark Wallheiser on display in the City Hall Gallery from January 9, 2013- March 4, 2013.

This new exhibition gives viewers an artful look at some of the area's most recognizable people and locations. From notable politicians, athletes, and visionaries to our unique architecture and natural landmarks, this exhibit promises to be a celebration of Tallahassee at its finest.

Roger Raepple shows us the beauty of our own backyard. In his photographs, he elevates the surroundings that we may have grown immune to and reminds us to take in the scenery of the city. Raepple often experiments with different styles, processes, cameras and accessories, allowing the viewer to see a familiar sight from a completely new perspective. Using SLR, infared and even iPhone technology, his images encourage gallery goers to take a walk around town and maybe travel down the road a bit to take in some unique settings. “For me photography encourages the fun of exploring and discovering new ways to relate to and reveal a subject or a feeling.”

Mark Wallheiser has taken portraits of some of the Big Bend’s most memorable faces. In his 27 years as staff photographer at the Tallahassee Democrat, he documented the people of our area and all aspects of the fabric of Tallahassee. Now an independent business owner, Wallheiser creates imagery for businesses and individuals. Many of his photos on display were created in the days prior to Photoshop. “A photographer was forced to capture everything he wanted in the final photograph on one sheet or frame of film.” Because of this training, Wallheiser’s current work remains 95%+ Photoshop free meaning his digital images are in front of his camera, not composited or created in the computer.

A public exhibit reception is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 from 6:00pm-7:30pm at the City Hall Gallery. There is no charge for the reception or the exhibition.

The City Hall Gallery is located on the second floor of City Hall, 300 South Adams Street and is open Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 5:30 pm.

This exhibit is one of over a dozen annual exhibitions curated by the Council on Culture & Arts. The exhibit is part of the City of Tallahassee’s Art in Public Places program.
