During a recent hearing in a lawsuit involving a death row inmate scheduled to die by lethal injection, Assistant Florida Department of Corrections secretary Timothy Cannon gave testimony about how the state performs executions.
Cannon's testimony reveals the Department of Corrections added an additional "consciousness check" on inmates given a new cocktail of drugs following news media reports about the Oct. 15 execution of William Happ, and how that execution seemed to take longer than previous executions.
Cannon also reveals other interesting details not seen by execution witnesses, including that a video camera trained on the inmate's face as he dies is broadcast to DOC officials and others sitting in a back room at Florida State Prison.
