“We are pleased to be part of this initiative to raise awareness of bullying and hazing issues that college and high school students, and even younger children are facing throughout Florida and the nation,” said Larry Robinson, interim president of Florida A&M University. “Our goal, along with our friends at Bethune-Cookman University and all Consortium members, is to stimulate constructive dialogue about the senseless and damaging nature of bullying and hazing. We believe Facebook is a great vehicle to foster the interaction among individuals and groups needed to accomplish our goal. We are optimistic that individuals of all ages from all over the U.S. will join us in our efforts to Unite to End Bullying and Hazing by signing our Facebook pledge and will encourage all of their friends and family to do so as well.”
The Florida Classic Consortium’s Anti-Bullying and Anti-Hazing Symposium will be held on Friday, Nov.16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Amway Center with proceeds benefiting the Consortium’s fund to raise awareness of bullying and hazing. This free event will consist of two morning workshops focusing on social media etiquette, prevention and legal ramifications. The symposium will also include a moderated Question and Answer session featuring professional panelists including keynote speaker and Georgetown University sociology professor, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson who also serves as a MSNBC Political Analyst. Panelists will include Milton Creagh, motivational speaker and TV personality and Chubb Rock, hip hop entertainer and radio host. Shannon Owens, Orlando Sentinel Sports columnist and analyst, will moderate the panel.
“The Florida Classic Consortium Anti-Bullying and Anti-Hazing Symposium provides a platform for Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) and Florida A&M University to come together and educate our young people on this national and ever-so-prevalent problem,“ said B-CU’s interim president Edison O. Jackson, Ed.D. “We are raising the next generation of leaders. We must ensure that they are fully equipped with the tools necessary to be agents of change in the classroom and community. We encourage our university and the community-at-large to sign the Facebook pledge and continue the dialogue.”
Registration for the symposium is open to the public, both students and adults. Advanced registration is required as space is limited. Please visit BandTogetherCampaign.com for more information and to register.
