Thomasville, GA- Wayne Sheets, known as Steve by his friends, just celebrated his 57th birthday Tuesday and what better gift to receive then a check for $3 million.

"It's kind of strange," Sheets said. "A little shocking; I just don't know exactly what to say."

Sheets bought the "$3,000,000 Taxes Paid" scratch off at Flash Foods along East Pinetree Boulevard. But, buying the ticket was nothing out of the ordinary.

"I try to just spend 40 dollars each week and if I win anything, I put the original money back in my pocket and I spend the rest on more tickets," he said.

Under Georgia law, the store that sold the winning ticket doesn't get a cut of the prize money. However, Sheets said that when he found out he won, he raced back up to the store, did a victory dance with the clerk who sold him in the winning ticket, then slipped him a hundred dollar bill.

"We've been telling him for years, 'Steve, you're going to win big one day,' and it just so happens he did," said Chasity Whitehead, an employee at Flash Foods.

Sheets says luck hasn't always been on his side. He worked as a carpenter for more than 38 years, but a recent injury left him jobless.

"I blew my knee out and I've been on workman's comp, with reduced wages; almost lost my house," he said. "It ended last week, and I was going to go get a job Monday morning, but I'm not now."

The father of three and grandfather of two said his first purchase was a new car.
