"Tornado-like" Sounds Worry Residents Wednesday Evening

We had a lot of calls early Wednesday evening, primarily from the area from Woodville to Crawfordville, about rumbling sounds that sounded like a freight train, with residents fearing it was a tornado. But, it was NOT. The leading edge of thunderstorms was well to the south by that time, and while there were still rumbles of thunder, the severe weather was over.
It was certainly unusual, and for those residents - a bit scary, but it was not a funnel cloud or tornado. It was likely a phenomena called "ducting", and the Tallahassee National Weather Service office addressed it in the special statement below. (Thanks Tallahassee NWS!)

...STRANGE SOUNDS BEING REPORTED ACROSS THE FLORIDA BIG BEND...

THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL REPORTS OF VERY STRANGE SOUNDS FROM THE WOODVILLE AREA SINCE ABOUT 645 PM EST. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BELIEVES THIS PHENOMENON IS BEING CAUSED BY THUNDER FROM DISTANT LIGHTNING STROKES... BOUNCING OFF A VERY STABLE LAYER ABOVE THE GROUND. THIS IS CALLED DUCTING...AND CAN ALLOW SOUND TO TRAVEL UNUSUALLY LONG DISTANCES. THIS SOUND HAS BEEN MISTAKENLY ATTRIBUTED TO POSSIBLE TORNADOES...BUT WE AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WANT TO BE VERY CLEAR THAT THERE ARE NO TORNADOES ... AND NONE ARE EXPECTED.

I heard this noise around 1 or 2 am which woke me up frm sleep and lasted at least 10 minutes. It was horifing as a huge plain is going over my house in slow motion.

I heard this exact sound on Thursday, March 15th at 10:00 pm or a little after, it wasn't the train, nor a jet or military plane that we often here. I thought it was a funnel cloud at first above the house, and it stopped just as quick as this did on the video. My co-worker heard the same sound that evening as well, the sky was clear.

I am leaving a comment now because I just heard the same sound March 4th, 2012 at about 3:30am. I heard the one that happened on March 9th, 2011 to. I was home alone & pregnant. I was watching TV when the sound caught my attention. It was so loud that my windows were shaking. I went outside & the sound intensified. I thought it was a tornado or a plane, but the sound did not move anywhere. It lasted for about twenty minutes then stopped. Only to start again for a short time a few minutes later. I had dismissed it until I heard about these weird sounds happening globally. Do not believe at all that it was jet engine testing. I heard the sound again recently, not as loud as the first, but the same sound. It came over my house then stopped in the woods & did not move whatever it was. The sound did not dissipate. It lasted for about 20 minutes then disappeared. I don't think they test jet engines at 3:40am!!

the sound is a massive Weather Fabrication Device. Cloud producing machines. Theres another in Mississippi. It just combines Hydrogen and Oxygen to produce a cloud and send it to the atmosphere and create rain, very simple and very efficient.

Sounds very similar to the "music" that has recently begun echoing from tjose caves in Tibet. Is this town above any kind of cave system? That might explain the noise and the vibrations... Patrick

heard something a couple of weeks ago when the last storm came through blountstown at 1:00 in the morning sounded like a train whistle, it woke the whole house up, but they also said we had no tornadoes, lots of trees down and roofs damaged, who knows, they cant predict weather worth a flip anymore

Why can't a logical, scientific explanation suffice for some people. I know I've got to go to bed now so I can work tomorrow, but people with nothing better to do will be up all night listening to George Noory on the radio or watching reruns of "The X-Files", and coming up with more crazy conspiracy theories to explain anything they find out of the ordinary. Get a life, people!

It's Bush's fault. His greedy oil companies are drilling for oil again. He must be stopped!
