Madison County Sheriff's Office Release

Madison County, FL - Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Wednesday the 23rd day of January, 2013 at 12:39 PM, a Sheriff’s Deputy attempted a traffic stop on US 90 for a traffic infraction. The vehicle was a 1996 green Ford 2 door, occupied by only the driver and was traveling in an easterly direction.

After stopping the vehicle, the Deputy approached the driver only to have the driver quickly back up and accelerate off. The Deputy initiated a pursuit engaging blue lights and siren and requested assistance. The pursuit ended at the intersection of CR 255 and Plantation.

A second Deputy had positioned himself at this intersection and deployed a tire deflation device. However the driver briefly stopped as the Deputy un-holstered his firearm and ordered the driver to exit the vehicle. The driver refused to follow the lawful commands and accelerated directly towards the Deputy. The Deputy discharged his firearm striking the vehicle. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

The driver was identified as Benjamin Joseph Koon, W/M, DOB: 07/04/1979 of Live Oak Florida. The driver sustained apparent injuries from the vehicle crash and not the shots fired by the deputy.
