ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- The University of Central Florida finished third in the nation and 21st in the world at the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest.

Known as the "Battle of the Brains" of computer programming, UCF placed behind New York University and the University of Texas and Brownville in the competition held in Ekaterinburg, Russia last week.

The contest includes three-member teams receiving up to 12 problems that involve math, logic, graphs, charts, geometry and other categories. Each team then tries to solve the most problems in the five-hour contest, writing a computer program for each solution.

UCF was among 122 teams competing, and advanced from a pool of 8,000 regional teams worldwide.

This is the 25th time UCF has competed in the World Finals since establishing the team in 1982.
