Valdosta, GA - More people are out of work, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
New stats out Thursday morning put unemployment in southwest Georgia at 9.9%. That's up from 9.1% the month before and also higher than where it sat at this time last year.
In Metro Valdosta, it's up a full percentage point to 9.1%.
Unemployment is up all across the state of Georgia. Southwest Georgia's unemployment rate of 9.9% soars far beyond the state's rate of 8.6%.
Ieshia Flanders is fighting a tough battle over the few jobs available in Valdosta. She has management experience in fast food restaurants, and hopes that gives her the edge.
"That's what people are looking for these days. They're looking for experience. Every time you go apply for a job, the necessary needs are experience," Flanders said.
Labor Officials say the rate jumped primarily because large numbers of education workers are unemployed during the summer. The other factor is new college graduates who are still looking for work.
The lowest jobless rate was in metro Athens at 7.2%. The highest was in the heart of Georgia-Altamaha region at 12.9%.
