“ELECT UNITED” was the cry from the campaign floor during United Way of the Big Bend’s (UWBB) 70th Annual Community Campaign Kickoff at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center.
Nearly 500 enthusiastic Big Bend volunteers, campaign coordinators, community leaders, donors, supporters, and local residents waved banners and signs in the auditorium as they nominated ELECT UNITED over Apathy and Ignorance. Tables decorated in red, white and blue, each with a County or Sponsor Banner in the center littered the hall floor. Private poling booths greeted the attendees as they entered and added a real convention feel to the room.
The 2012-2013 Campaign kicked off with some good old fashioned ‘stumpin’, as this years Campaign Chair, Ron Sachs arrived on the back of the flatbed truck. Sachs had no trouble getting everyone into election mode! ... “We are going to have an extraordinarily effective and successful campaign,” said Sachs. “Our community needs us more now than ever before. It’s time to stand and make a statement, make our voices known that Big Bend donors and volunteers have chosen to use UWBB to once again lead the way in how to take care of each other. It’s time to fight Apathy and Elect United!” With his arrival also came the answer so many in the audience were looking for. The number for this year’s goal, that was revealed on the side of the flatbed. This year’s goal is $5,900,000.
A political debate ensued with Ignorance standing in for Apathy, who just didn’t care enough to make it today. As fun as the day was in its theme, apathy and ignorance are rampant in our society, and ELECT UNITED is a serious call to action for the people of the Big Bend to be aware to the needs of others in these difficult times.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the United Way's Campaign here in the Big Bend. Around 500 organizers and supporters gathered at the Civic Center to get fired up to launch their 2012-2013 campaign.
The theme of the kick-off and this year's fundraising effort is "Elect United" since it's convention time for politicians, they decided to stage this event as a United Way Convention.
The United Way Big Bend Campaign started back in 1943. To date, the organization has raised more than 128 million dollars that goes back to our community.
This year's campaign chair is Ron Sachs and we hear he made quite an entrance into Thursday's festivities.
