Valdosta, GA - A local college professor has been honored for her work with migrant farm workers.
Dr. Tracy Woodard of VSU was recognized by The Migrant Farmworkers Clinic in Lake Park for her volunteer work with their patients. Woodard and VSU students tutor children of migrant workers, and also collect food and clothing for them. She says the families can only work when there is farming to be done, and are on their own the rest of the time.
"They can't get Medicaid, they can't get Food Stamps, they can't get a lot of the aid that people get upset about. They can't get free healthcare. But they are providing a service that you and I couldn't live without", Woodard says.
Woodard also takes students to the U.S. - Mexico border each year to learn about why workers immigrate each year and the difficulties they face as they try to make their way to America.
