Doctor William Sammons didn't hold back when he talked about the dangers of a biomass plant coming to Valdosta.

He and members of the Wiregrass Activists for Clean Energy have been fighting to educate people about the dangerous affects for years.

"The health risks to children from this plant are very significant," said Sammons.

Those risks include an increased risk of cancer, lung disease and respiratory disease and are just some of the points Wiregrass's leader is trying to make people aware of.

"We have still way too many myths if not straight out lies circulated about the "health benefits," economic visibility and renewable energy," said Dr. Michael Noll.

On these 22 acres behind me is where the biomass plant is scheduled to be built.

The Industrial Authority says it will provide up to 150 jobs, and despite what their opposition says, in these tough economic times this is a great way to bring in jobs.

"This is a good project. It's going to have a tremendous economic impact on the region. It's actually going to clean the air quality in the region," said Industrial Authority Director Brad Lofton.
But the Valdosta-Lowndes Industrial Authority says this is a clean-green plant and nothing like a coal plant.

Construction on the plant is set to begin this spring... but opponents says the battle is far from over.

WACE says it will host another Biomass plant meeting January 26th at the South Georgia Regional Library.
