Press Release: Volunteer Florida

The Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service is a national bipartisan effort to recognize the positive impact of national service in cities; to thank those who serve; and to encourage citizens to give back to their communities.

April 9, Mayor John Marks will join more than 800 mayors from across the country in a day of recognition to highlight the impacts of national service in cities including Tallahassee. The nation's Mayors are increasingly turning to national service and volunteerism as a cost-effective strategy to address city challenges at a time of fiscal constraint.

Joined by Volunteer Florida CEO Chester Spellman, Elder Care Services President and CEO Mark D. Baldino and local national service members, Mayor Marks will present a proclamation honoring national service and will then participate in a service project at Elder Day Stay.
Mayor Marks will call Bingo and national service members will be assisting with bingo and reading to seniors.

"The City of Tallahassee is proud to join communities across the nation as we celebrate the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service," said City of Tallahassee Mayor John Marks. "Each and every day the members of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps help improve the quality of life for all of our citizens through their extraordinary actions and dedicated service."

"National service is a vital resource for Florida, with more than 18,000 national service participants across our state," said CEO Spellman. "AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps participants have a positive and lasting impact, making our cities better places to live."

"We are excited to be a part of this wonderful Day of Service in collaboration with AmeriCorps, Volunteer Florida and the City of Tallahassee," said Amber R. Tynan, director, development and communications for Elder Care Services, Inc. "It's opportunities like these that allow our community to come together and be a force for those who need us most; because together we're better."
