Volunteers Needed for Saturday Produce Gleaning in Leon County to Feed Local Hungry Children
What: On Saturday, January 7th from 9a.m. - NOON, America's Second Harvest needs volunteers to help pick fresh vegetables at Lott's Community Garden located 11.3 miles East of Tallahassee's Capital Circle on Highway 27 South. These turnip, mustard, and collard greens are in excellent condition and will otherwise go to waste unless Second Harvest can glean and distribute them to residents throughout the Big Bend struggling with hunger. We estimate the potential for this harvest at over 3,000 pounds of greens. Greens harvested from this event will be distributed to more than 300 children who participate in our Backpack for Kids Program; a program which provides children at-risk of having no food during the weekends a bag full of food. These bags ensure a child returns to school on Monday well nourished and able to focus on their education and not on the pain in their stomachs.
At least 15 volunteers are needed for this event. We are asking for the public's help. We request that volunteers email firstname.lastname@example.org <mailto:email@example.com> to sign up.
WHY: America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend has seen a significant increase in demand as the economy continues to lag. These greens and the continued success of our Produce Program help us to feed a record number of Big Bend families, despite donations and funding for government programs being reduced.
