Civic, Faith, Student Groups and Others Coalesce to Emphasize Voter Registration, Participation

Tallahassee, FL --

A coalition comprised of organizations representing the civic, faith, student and labor communities gathered today for a press event to mark the kick-off of the "got power?" initiative, which will emphasize the importance of getting registered and participating in this year's elections. The book-closing deadline for the primary election is July 16, 2012 and, in order to encourage eligible citizens to get registered, the coalition will be hosting a community-wide registration blitz on Saturday, July 14.

The Leon County locations where citizens can register to vote this Saturday from noon to 4 PM are:

All Stars Day School, 702 E. Orange Avenue, 32301
Tallahassee Urban League, 923 Old Bainbridge Road, 32303
Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church, 3116 North Meridian Road, 32312
Additionally, staff from the Supervisor of Elections office will be available at every Walgreen's store throughout the county from 10 AM to 1 PM to register voters.

"The 'got power?' campaign is a nonpartisan, grassroots-led effort that is aimed at boosting voter turnout in Leon County and the surrounding areas," said local organizer Jabari Paul. "Through this campaign, we hope that people are inspired to learn about the issues and candidates that will be on the ballot this August and November, and that they will be compelled to exercise their right to vote."

Jessica Lowe-Minor, Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of Florida, emphasized the importance of civic participation. "Registering to vote enables citizens to voice their opinions about the policies and legislation that impact their lives," Lowe-Minor said. "The outcome of the upcoming primary and general elections will affect issues that all Floridians care about, and it is critical that eligible citizens make their voices heard by getting their votes counted this fall. Democracy is not a spectator sport."

Pastor Brant Copeland, Co-convener of the Tallahassee Interfaith Clergy, added, "Recent changes to voting laws are having a disproportionate impact on minorities, the poor, and the elderly. We urge people of all faiths to register to vote, to help their neighbors to register, and to work together to make the democratic process open and accessible to all citizens."

"We are here as a unified front, regardless of party affiliation, to bring the zeal and enthusiasm of voting back to the people," said Josephine Gamboa-Montgomery, Executive Director of the Living Stones International ministry. "There is a saying that a mind is a terrible thing to waste, and so is your vote."
