WORKFORCE Plus Recognized for Assisting with FEMA Local Hire Program

Tallahassee, Florida- August 27, 2012

WORKFORCE plus staff were recognized at the Joint Field Office on Aug. 16 for their urgent and comprehensive support during FEMA’s response to Tropical Storm Debby.

Tropical Storm Debby made landfall in Florida on June 26 with winds of 40mph. North Florida received the heaviest torrential downpour. Areas reached totals of 25 inches of rain, resulting in widespread flash flooding, road closures and severe power outages. In Wakulla County, over 42 homes were destroyed and nearly 500 were damaged by the storm. Losses throughout the county were measured to be $9.1 million.

FEMA’s Tropical Storm Debby Response Team served many counties; Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Franklin, Hernando, Highlands, Pasco, Pinellas, Suwannee and Wakulla counties.

A certificate of appreciation was presented to WORKFORCE plus CEO, Kimberly A. Moore and the Project Officer, Lauren Green for their excellent and timely work in hiring 24 temporary FEMA employees. All employees were hired within a week.

“WORKFORCE plus mission statement states that we provide comprehensive employment and workforce services for our areas of service,” said Kimberly A. Moore, CEO of WORKFORCE plus. “When FEMA asked for our services we were honored to assist in our region’s time of need.”

“Kimberly and Lauren went far beyond any reasonable expectations to support the project,” said Gracia B. Szczech, Federal Coordinating Officer. “Their quick and careful work was instrumental in supporting our mission of assisting the people of Florida.”

FEMA staff has stated that they want to use their experience in working with WORKFORCE plus as a model when engaging other state and local workforce agencies in recruiting and screening temporary FEMA employees.

WORKFORCE plus offers various services to assist their service area; Gadsden, Leon and Wakulla county. One such program is the Closing the Gap initiative. The program is an employer based training project for current employees of companies. The goal of the program is too eliminate the skills gap created between the outdated skills of existing workers and the critical skills needed to complete their job.
