Wakulla County, Florida- July 27, 2012
Airport expansion plans in Wakulla County have area residents divided.
The current airport is a grass landing strip with a length of 2800 feet. To bring the airport up to current safety regulations, the runway needs to be paved, lengthened and shifted 35 feet to the west.
Commissioners say residents who oppose the project don't want the county to pay for it.
They've been approved for a $75,000.00 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.
"All this is dependent upon F-DOT funding. The county is not gonna be putting any money into this for any construction activities," said David Edwards, Wakulla County Administrator.
Even with an approved grant, they say improvements are still four to five years away.
