Whooping Cough Outbreak In Okaloosa Co. Totals 13

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Health officials say there's an outbreak of whopping cough Okaloosa County, which has had 13 cases so far this year.

The Okaloosa County Health Department has announced the outbreak of pertussis, or whooping cough, on Friday. Two infants and eight children are among those suffering from the contagious disease, as well as adolescents and adults.

Health Department Director Dr. Karen Chapman told The Northwest Florida Daily news (http://bit.ly/17wDmoJ ) that whooping cough is spread by an infected person coughing or sneezing.

Public health officials urge residents to have their children immunized against the disease to "protect the health of the whole community."

All patients with confirmed cases of whooping cough have been treated and are recovering.
