Associated Press Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Some 74 years after graduating from high school, a 91-year-old woman received a bachelor's degree from Daytona State College.
College officials say Irene Lewis may be the oldest graduate in the school's 53-year history. The crowd at Ocean Center in Daytona Beach erupted in applause on Monday as moved across the stage in a wheelchair.
Lewis downplayed her accomplishment, telling the Daytona Beach News-Journal that graduating "beats a movie." But the gold tassel on her cap indicated she graduated with a grade point average between 3.8 and 4.0.
She graduated high school in 1939 and received an Associate of Arts degree in 1972.
But the newspaper reports Lewis may not be done. She says she'll take a little time off before starting graduate school.
As Lewis says, "It beats shuffleboard."
