Tallahassee, FL - Since he was five weeks old, Peanut the 6 year old Chihuahua has been by Ethel Harvey's side.

"He's my family, he's my protector, my little companion," said Harvey.

She says this past Wednesday, a female pit bull mix belonging to her nephew jumped over the fence at her sister's home and started attacking Peanut while Ethel was holding him.

"They found an old rake over there and my brother kept beating and beating," said Harvey. "I was screaming, kill him, kill him, kill him, help me, help me," she said.

When the pit mix ran away, Peanut was badly injured including a neck gash.

Ethel had various cuts, scrapes, bruises and a bite mark on on her hand requiring 7 stitches.

She filed a report on the incident with Leon County Animal Control.

"I'm really just thankful to be alive, it could've been worse," Harvey said.

Shelter Director Erika Leckington says dog bite reports of humans are very common in Leon County.

She says once it happens, dogs are brought to the shelter for a 10 day quarantine to make sure they didn't have rabies at the time they bit a person.

"We receive dogs every week, sometimes every day," said Leckington.

And what ultimately happens to those dogs depends on several factors including whether or not the bite was provoked.

"Some of those animals go back to their owners," said Leckington.

"It's unfair that these dangerous dogs are out," said Harvey. "They can kill me, you, anybody," she said.

The pit bull mix will be put down because she was released by her owner and her bite was unprovoked.

Between October 1, 2012 and this past September 30th, there were 323 dog bite reports in Leon County or nearly one per day.
