Woman Faces Prison Possibility In Warning Shot Case

"My kids is all that I have," said Lakeisha Ryan. "I was protecting them that night," she said.

Ryan is a single mother with four teen-aged children.

On the night of April 20th, 2013 Ryan was holding a party for her cousin at a Tallahassee home on Harlem Street.

Court records show after rival gang members crashed the party and started a fight, Ryan grabbed her revolver and fired a warning shot into the air to get them to leave her home.

Ryan provided a picture showing the hole in her ceiling Tallahassee Police also found.

"After that everybody started running out the door and someone else started shooting in my house," said Ryan.

According to the police report, three teen-aged boys were shot.

All of them suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police found Ryan's gun with a single round fired.

She was not charged with shooting any of the teens.

"I don't know that anybody has been charged with or anyone else has been charged with possessing a firearm that night discharging a firearm or shooting anybody that night," said Stacy Sharp, Ryan's attorney.

But Ryan now faces an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge.

Marissa Alexander's similar case in Jacksonville created a national firestorm.

She's awaiting a new trial after being sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a warning shot to scare off her abusive husband.

State lawmakers passed a bill to allow warning shots this past session.

Governor Scott is currently reviewing it.

It would amend the state's stand your ground law which allows people to respond with deadly force if they feel threatened.

Reporter: "Would she be in a better place legally if she actually shot someone?"

Sharp: "Well that's a very difficult question to ask."

"I don't believe I should be charged with any crime because I was protecting my family," said Ryan.

Ryan's attorney Stacy Sharp says he plans to meet with Assistant State Attorney Kathy Ray to try to work out a deal in this case.

Our calls to Ray for comment so far have not been returned.
