Tallahassee, FL - More than 200 people attended the Women And The Workplace Summit that took place today at the FSU Turnbull Conference Center today. It was all put on by the Tallahassee/Leon County Commission On The Status Of Women & Girls.
Some of the objectives of the summit were to identify and increase awareness of key workplace issues relating to women.
In Leon County both womens and mens wages reveal that across the board virtually all women earn less for comparable work than men. Also a single woman without children in Leon County would have to earn $9.42-- significantly more than Florida's minimum wage, to support herself. That is why the Chair of the On The Status Of Women & Girls,Robin Hassler, saw the need for this conference. "We really want to talk about the problem women are facing in terms of economic security and come up with solutions for them for recommendations for actions essentially," said Hassler.
Women's Health and Wellness, Women's Poverty and Gender Diversity were some of the issues discussed during the conference. The topic of diversity is the reason Gadsden County resident Beverly Nash wanted to attend. " It's really important that we stay involved. We learned about the issues involved in terms of workforce and women issues, diversity issues. We just need to be an advocate," said Nash.
For Leon County Commissioner District 5, Kristin Dozier, says the summit is to make people aware of the impact women can have in the workforce. " This isn't just about women's rights, it's about the fact that we can play an incredible part in our economy. I think its really important to look at women's roles and having more access, because it will help the whole get stronger. All of our country, all of our businesses and our local community," said Dozier.
The recommendations made by participants at the summit will be given to the advisory committee. From there the volunteer committee draw up a report to give to the city of Tallahassee and Leon County in January of 2014.
