Everyone needs a little help from time to time, but some need it more than others...That's where folks like Janice Phillips comes in. Her unconditional love knows no boundaries...
You may not find anyone more dedicated to their work than Janice Phillips.
Phillips is the director of Habilitation Management Services and has been serving the Developmental disabilities community in Tallahassee for over 30 years. She helps over 500 clients, some with autism, others with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or mental retardation. It's her job to make sure they are able to live a normal life and be a positive member of society.
"To see them fulfill their goals and dreams and live in their own apartments and have meaningful things to do during the day...it's very gratifying and rewarding."
Joanne and Janice have worked together for 20 years. Once a week, Joanne comes in the office to work. Stamping envelopes or just helping out in anyway she can.
"We've been there to support people in less happy times and to help celebrate achievement. It's really what keeps us all going."
But the future may not be kind to folks like Janice. State budget cuts means there may not be adequate care for Joanne and her friends. That will force Janice to work around the problem she'll never stop helping.
"We need to help them evaluate but at the same time not jeopardize the basic care that they might need."
For now, Janice will continue to work her magic, making Joanne happy and many others with Developmental Disabilities. A woman who truly cares about her clients and is a strong advocate is someone that everyone should know and Janice Phillips is truly one of a kind.
