Tallahassee, FL - A man, just out of prison, is arrested again, this time, for attempted murder.
He's accused of attacking his own father.
Tallahassee police say 45-year old Joseph Garwood Jr. hit his father with a fire poker.
This happened at their home on Albert Drive Monday afternoon.
Police say the son has a history of mental illness and had not been taking his medication.
When officers arrived on scene, they say he told them he had homicidal and suicidal thoughts.
Dave Northway, Tallahassee Police Department, stated, "People who are experiencing a break down need to be spoken to in different ways. There's different techniques that are officers are taught to handle the situation."
Garwood was just released from prison about two weeks ago.
He was in prison for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Tallahassee, FL - Joseph Garwood, age 45, was arrested last night on charges of Aggravated Assault with Intent to Commit a Felony, and Attempted Premeditated Murder.
The victim was Garwood's father, whom he had been staying with since being released from prison in June.
The Probable Cause states that Garwood hit his father in the back of the head with a fire poker, after having suicidal thoughts.
Police responding to the scene say Garwood stated "I tried to kill my father so you would have to send me to death row."
