It takes a lot of guts and courage to leave home and start off on a new adventure.
And one Tallahassee man did just that over two decades ago. Some may say his last name got him in the door, but his hard work and determination is why he's been so successful.
It doesn't take long before Steve Chaires is answering the same question over and over again.
"Everyone has to ask, are you part of the Charies or do you know Harry Chaires?"
The answer is yes to both. Steve Chaires is part of that Chaires family and isn't shy about his lineage. But he's been able to carve out his own niche. In November 1988, Steve took off from Houston, Texas with a dream and a lot of courage.
"I saved up some money, bought a pickup truck and moved to Tallahassee to open a moving company."
That moving company turned into a storage company and today Steve owns Advanced Moving and Storage, an 11 acre facility with 150,000 square feet of storage facilities in Tallahassee.
But Steve has never allowed his success to be used only on himself. Above his desk are his inspirations. His two children and his cousin Daniel who died fighting for our country. He's used them as a way of giving back to just about anyone that asks.
"It's good to help people out. Everyone needs a hand at some point in time."
Chaires got involved with the little league of Chaires donating money and time. Then the Boy Scouts, Pop Warner football, and Toys for Tots. His business is now a permanent drop off location for Second Harvest Food Bank.
"I help kids who can't help themselves. Their situations that they are in not by their choice. It's by their parents choice or whatever circumstances they were dealt. It just wasn't their doing and I always try to help the kids
