Valdosta, GA - The saying in golf is that you drive for show and putt for dough, but at the South Geirgia Classic, your drive can earn you dough, too. After all, the course is 7781 yards long. That's a whooping 300 yards longer than any other course on the Nationwide Tour.
Former UGA golfer Kevin Kisner says, "Yeah, I played in the tournament last year, and it was a lot more firm last year, so distance is really going to show up this year with it being a little softer. So, yoou're going to have to hit it long and hard."
With better equipment, the stress to have courses play longer is becoming the new face of the game.
Kevin Chappell, second on the Nationwide money list, says, "I just think that's where the modern day game is going. Everyone can hit it far, so they're trying to build golf course longer and longer, and I guess I would call this a modern golf coourse."
Bobby Gates, Nationwide moeny leader, adds, "I think they;re getting a lot of good courses like this that make it challenging for us, and everything seems to be going longer, and I think it's given us all a different challenge than the old-style courses where it's short and you have to play position golf. This is going to favor the long hitters, and people that can kind of overpower the golf course."
If nothing else, at least outslug their opponents for the top prize.
