Tallahassee, FL - Will West is a pitcher on a mission. He wants to lead Chiles to a state title and he's done his part to help by going 9-2 with a 2.35 earned run average. He's got a great pickoff move and he's pretty adept at getting the strikeout having rung up 82 batters on the year.
Chiles head baseball coach Dick Steed says, "Will is just a great competitor. He's got a great breaking ball, left-handed breaking ball. His velocity is pretty good too. He's got a changeup, too. When he's locating those three pitches, which he does often, he's very effective."
West hopes to be effective again on Friday when Chiles plays Pace in the state playoffs.
Steed adds, "Kids play well behind him because they have a lot of confidence in him whenever he takes the mound, they know we have a pretty good chance."
But West knows he hasn't done it alone. He's quick to credit his teammates for their offensive outbursts.
West says, "Every time I pitch, I know that my offense is going to put up runs. hey usually put up four or five runs in the first inning, and if not, they'll put up one or two. I mean that's awesome. It's a big relief to know that you have an offense that can produce such runs."
West is zeroing in on his opponents and that championship run because he's already signed, sealed and delivered to play for Georgia Tech next year.
