Tallahassee, FL - Joy Becker may have retired from coaching Leon volleyball, but she's as active with the game as ever. She's helping to teach kids of all ages and sizes the fundamentals of the game.
Former Leon volleyball player Katie Johnson says, "She teaches you more than just the fundamentals. She also teaches a lot of rotations and things like that. Just like strategic things in the game and you really grow and it really helps you.. A lot of these kids that are in middle school, they will have an edge on others.."
Former Leon head volleyball coach Joy Becker adds, "You got to think going to camp and hitting each station every time, it helps develop the whole player, so they can be good at each skill. It's just a lot of fun watching them grow up."
If the kids grow up to eventually play for Leon, well then they might get the chance to give back to other kids, since Leon players and ex-players help with the camp.
Becker says, "It has to help them develop as players, but they're kind of put on the spot sometimes. They're asked questions, and sometimes they don't know the answer, and they find out that they didn't know as much as they thought they did."
Even FSU's Mira Djuric helped give some pointers, as the Capital City is starting to become a hotbed for quality volleyball. A lot of that has to with Joy Becker starting kids off early in one of her camps.
