Tallahassee, FL - "Recruiting is like shaving. If you don't do it for a day, you look like a bum."
The Florida State Seminoles certainly haven't looked like slouches as of late as they've made the NCAA Tournament the past two years.
FSU assistant basketball coach Stan Jones says, "Obviously there's a whole lot more interest, and it's a lot easier to talk to people with the more success you have."
FAMU hasn't had that type of success lately, but they do feature a new gym that should help in recruiting. The Rattlers have signed of of Florida's premiere high school talents - Avery Moore. The senior guard helped lead the Rickards Raiders to a state title.
FAMU head basketball coach Eugene Harris says, "A player of his stature will definitely help recruit players in Tallahassee, and in the state of Florida because everyone knows his reputation.""
FSU has had the reputation of featuring one of the tallest lineup in the nation, but they did lose some size to the NBA draft which begs the question. Are they looking for size or substance?
Jones says, "There's not a whole lot of exact science in terms of what we do recruiting other than look for kids that you think have the talent to beat the top-level teams in your league. We've been fortunate to have a lot of size here. The July period is really more about evaluating which kids this year are going to difference makers for you. You really already identified your core group of kids. You kind of have to work forward."
Which means getting the names of kids to target over the next two to three seasons. After all, you don't want to look like you stopped shaving.
