Leon County Board of County Commissioners Release: Leon County Establishes New Partnership with Waste Pro
Leon County Commissioners unanimously approved Waste Pro as the new provider for waste collection services in unincorporated Leon County Tuesday night. The new partnership with solid waste company Waste Pro will save current subscribers at least $71 annually.
The agreement with current residential waste collector, Waste Management, is due to expire at the end of September. As a result, Leon County issued an invitation for companies to bid on the contract. Waste Pro was the lowest respondent and will begin servicing residents in unincorporated Leon County at the beginning of October.
“This was an open and competitive process that resulted in significant savings to many households in our community,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox.
The new services will feature “single-stream” recycling, meaning residents will no longer need to separate their paper recyclables from their cans and bottles. This simplified recycling method is anticipated to increase recycling rates by at least 20 percent. Waste Pro also offered another environmental benefit in that 100 percent of their truck fleet will operate on compressed natural gas, which is a cleaner burning fuel than diesel.
“This new partnership with Waste Pro fully illustrates the Board’s commitment to reduce costs and increase recycling as we further enhance our environmental responsibility,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long.
Leon County residents will be further informed of the transition from Waste Management to Waste Pro prior to the new contract’s start in October.
