Tallahassee Mayor John Marks spent the afternoon at a local restaurant promoting the importance of jobs and keeping it local.

Mayor Marks greeted customers at the Kool Beanz Cafe on Thomasville Road. Local Business Saturday will take place this Saturday, May 14 and is done every year in collaboration with Mayor Marks, the City of Tallahassee, and several local business leaders to encourage folks to shop local.

Halley Locke supports local business and says, "Local shopping is really to take care of our own community, to be putting back into our own community, taking care of our friends and family and neighbors and not only that but getting to know those neighbors that we don't know. "

Mayor Marks says he hope people will continue to support local businesses to bring more money in for the county.

[UPDATE] TALLAHASSEE, FL – 5-10 2pm -

Tallahassee Mayor John Marks rolled up his sleeves today and served as a volunteer employee at Kool Beanz Café to promote the importance of creating a “shop-local” culture, and to emphasize the role local businesses play in creating jobs. Marks engaged in a variety of tasks during his busy lunch hour shift, but his most important job was conveying to each of the customers how important local businesses are to Tallahassee’s economy (photo included below).

“I am excited to serve our community, albeit as in a very different manner today, as an honorary member of the Kool Beanz staff, said Marks. “At City Hall we’re working hard every day to promote our local businesses and to encourage the citizens of Tallahassee to do the same, and that’s why I’m here today - to remind everyone that local businesses are key to creating jobs here in our city.”

This workday is part of the ongoing efforts of the Mayor’s Local Business Saturday initiative, which began in January of 2011 and targets the second Saturday of each month as a day to encourager shoppers to purchase their products and services locally. Additionally, customers and business owners alike are encouraged to take advantage of the resources offered at the initiative’s website, www.LocalBusinessSaturday.com. Since the program’s inception, more than 160 businesses have signed up on the website.

“It’s really encouraging to see local leaders who not only recognize the positive impact small businesses have on our community, but also help spread the word”, said Keith Baxter owner and executive chef of Kool Beanz Café. “I think at the end of the day, people will be excited that we delivered an important message while trying something fun and creative.”
