Audie and Sandra Jones know how uncertain launching a business can be.

"We're a little concerned about will we sink too much money into something we can't recover from," says Audie Jones.

They plan to sell barbecue ribs and cakes at festivals.

Audie's wife, Sandra, says, "My husband loves to barbecue and he specializes in ribs and it's more of a hobby for us."

So, they're attending a luncheon at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College to learn the legal pitfalls of starting a new business.

"There's tax consideration, there's workers' comp considerations," says business law and commercial litigation attorney Drew DeMott who spoke at the luncheon.

Among the group, are eight contestants competing for $15,000 to start their venture.

The Jones' plan to name their business Jones Bones.

"We had just picked a name out like he had mentioned, sitting at the table," says Audie. "But now we'll go back and do the research to see if the name is already taken."

That research could save them a lawsuit if the name is already trademarked.

So, professionals recommend always make sure your business model has been checked and re-checked -- and then, go for it!

"Follow their dreams," says DeMott. "Follow their ideas and make good decisions so that they can make a dream a reality."

The winner of Guardian Bank's $15,000 start-up prize will be announced in December.

The event was also sponsored by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce.
