Tallahassee, Florida - December 22, 2011 -

New Pilot Fatigue Rules

The new pilot fatigue rules are also based on reports that it is common for pilots to take turns napping during flights...

The announcement comes just in time for the millions who are expected to fly this holiday season.

The revised rules will require that pilots receive at least ten-hour rest periods before flights, including the opportunity for eight hours of uninterrupted sleep.

The previous rules mandated a minimum eight-hour total rest period...

Aviation officials say that often resulted in not enough sleep when taking into account the time it takes to depart an airport and check into a hotel.

Mary Jean Sthrome, Tallahassee Airport passenger says, "There's been a lot of accidents, so I think they should have their rest, for everybody's sake; for theirs and their passengers'. I think that's an excellent idea."

A criticism of the new rules that has been brought up, is that the rules will be phased in slowly during the next two years ... in part because they will be expensive for the airlines to implement.

The F.A.A. projected the cost to the industry at 297 million dollars over ten year.

AAA says about 92 million Americans likely will travel 50 or more miles from home during the holiday season...

That's a 1.4 percent jump over last year.

However, only six percent of travelers are expected to take a plane...

That's a nearly ten percent decrease from a year ago.

Passengers flying the distance to the Tallahassee Regional Airport say, sometimes, you just can't beat flying.
